Easier on the eyes

Bright white pages can glare, especially at night or with sensitive eyes. In dark mode, light text stands on a dark background.

Text stays text

The pages are not turned into pictures: the text stays sharp at any zoom, and you can still search it, copy it and have it read aloud.

Photos keep their colours

«Dark, colours kept» only swaps light and dark: blue stays blue, red stays red. «Invert all colours» turns everything into its opposite, like a negative.

Black or dark gray

Choose pure black or a softer dark gray as the background. Pages that are already dark, such as slides, can stay as they are.

Your files stay with you

Your PDF files are converted entirely in your browser and are not uploaded to our servers. Only when you email the result, save it to the cloud or continue with another tool is it uploaded for that.

Several files at once

Convert one or many PDFs in one go and download them one by one or all together in a ZIP file.

Questions and Answers

How do I convert a PDF to dark mode?

Choose or drop your PDF files, pick the mode and the background and click «Invert colors». The dark PDFs are ready right away.

Can I still search and copy the text?

Yes. The text is not converted into images. It stays searchable and selectable, and screen readers can read it aloud.

What is the difference between the two modes?

«Dark, colours kept» makes light areas dark and dark areas light but keeps their hue, so photos and charts stay recognisable; text becomes white or light gray. «Invert all colours» turns every colour into its opposite: white becomes black, yellow becomes blue, and photos look like negatives.

Why did a page stay unchanged?

With «Leave dark pages unchanged», pages that are mostly dark already, such as slides or photos, are not inverted. Untick the option to invert them as well.

Can I print the dark PDF?

Yes, but the dark background is printed too and uses a lot of ink or toner. For printing, better use the original PDF.

Are links and form fields kept?

Yes. Links stay clickable and form fields can still be filled in. Comments are drawn into the page so that they become dark as well.

Is it free?

Yes. Converting PDFs to dark mode with PDF24 is free, without registration and without watermarks.
